Am I William Makepeace Thakeray reincarnated?

His birthday is July 18th, as is mine.

He loved libraries:

''It seems to me one cannot sit down in [the British Museum's Reading Room] without a heart full of grateful reverence,'' Thackeray wrote in 1860. ''I own to have said my grace at the table, and to have thanked Heaven for this my English birthright, freely to partake of these beautiful books, and speak the truth I find there.''

As do I!

He loved Jane Eyre:

"Thackeray provided such a positive review of Jane Eyre that Charlotte Bronte dedicated the second edition to him." He declared it a work "of great genius."

As did I!

And we totally look alike:

Happy Hour 4-7 Everyday!

Noooo!

Everyday means ordinary.

Every day
means every freakin' day.

This, for example, is wrong:

Let me be clear, though.

There is nothing wrong with having happy hour every day.

What a Lady!

"You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children."

-Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007)

Y algun dia; y algun dia yo estare

My shitty English translation:

Love can't be bought...

I can't believe what you did
I gave you all my love but you left
And never again, never again will this happen

Love can't be bought or sold
Thus this story listens and learns
Jose was an Indian who lived in poverty
And Maria was a princess who lived in nobility
Jose wanted Maria to be his wife
But destiny had something else prepared
Everything was fine until their parents found out
Because without money you have no value in society
Maria was forbidden to see Jose
Jose sadly spoke with the leaders
If you're poor and you love a rich girl
You must do something to earn rewards
If you go to war and return triumphant
[Something something] you prove your worth
Jose went to get his dream
Of the love of Maria he was the owner

Chorus

The days went by and the years passed
Maria was married to a rich man
They forgot about the Indian Jose
They said he died and besides he was poor
The war ended but Jose didn't come back
Maria suffered, she cried during the night
Jose was her love and the man that she loved
Without any hope, she took her own life
The following day Jose returned
But he was too late, Maria was hanged
Crying with sadness Jose picked her up
He asked the Gods to revive her
They could take his soul if they wanted to
He took his sword and cut out his heart
That's the end of this sad story

Chorus

The Aztecs learned a good lesson
that two lovers should not be put in this position
Jose's heart bled
Nourishing the earth that cried with hunger
In the place where they died the plants dried themselves
Like the sacred place the Aztecs left
The mountains remain with the song of Maria
The Indians hear it and this is how it goes:

Love cannot be bought
Love cannot be sold
And some day, and some day I will be
With this man, the man I loved

Chorus

I just spent the better part of an hour doing this. I'm putting it on my blog because I'm sorta proud, even though I should be ashamed that I've taken five years of Spanish and this the best I can do.

I wish

So last night I saw Mirah at the Triple Door (which BTW reminds me of some 1950s LV club). We've seen her before at Whitman, but this time she had longer hair and I had a good view of her the entire time and my friend was like, "She kind of reminds me of you." So I got it into my head that we actually look alike. What do you think? Could this be me if I were a Jewish lesbian indie rock princess with smaller boobs?

How about here?

In related news, one of my professors told me that I reminded her of Reese Witherspoon. Ha! Well, maybe here:

But only because she's surrounded by children.

"In Dreams Begin Responsibilities"

(That's the title of the last episode of My So-Called Life.)

This is what I dreamed last night:

We were students at a boarding school. I knew it was a boarding school because it reminded me of college only we were wearing uniforms. I was trying to sleep but I couldn't. Ricky was in my room reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I tried to curl up and go to sleep again, but I was agitated, so I went outside to the playground. I ran into Stephen Carter who looked about 35 years old and like he was having a rough time of it. He was mad at me and yelled at me, but I didn't understand why. Usher was standing nearby and I silently asked him to come rescue me, even though part of me really wanted to get to the bottom of why Stephen was angry. Usher came over and was like, "Hey what's going on?" I smiled at him and looked back to Stephen and tried to give him one of those "Hey, it's Usher, what else can I do but go with him?" kinda looks. So Usher and I walked over to the drinking fountain, but it got dark all of a sudden and I had to run back to my dorm. Ricky was still there, but once I came in he closed his book and said he had to go because he had detention with Snape.

End of Dream.

I have strange sort of memorable dreams a few times a week, so I'm not sure why I felt like writing down this one--the appearance of Stephen Carter, maybe, because I felt like I was seeing into the future of his face. I think I can trace that back to seeing (in real life) Josh Boris a few days ago at a Mariners game. I thought he looked old. And I saw Dru Johnston a week or so ago and thought he looked old too. Men's faces age differently than women's, I think.

And! Harry Potter torments my soul. Can I ever loosen its grip?
